The most commonly used weightloss surgery is the Roux-en-Y or gastric bypass. With the introduction of laparoscopy, this surgery is not very extensive but it is normally used as a last resort for a patient that is really obese. This kind of surgery is not reversible so the patient is normally made to go through a huge work up which includes a psychiatric evaluation. In this kind of surgical weight loss procedure a small pouch is used onto which the stomach is stapled down. Next a y shaped part of the small intestine is connected to the stomach pouch. This results in circumventing the majority of the small intestine due to which there is a decrease in the amount of nutrients and food absorbed. With this surgery, there come a lot of do’s and don’ts and for the safety of the patient, he or she must adhere strictly to the rules.
Another form of weightloss surgery is liposuction which is normally considered to be a kind of regular plastic surgery. The surgical weight loss procedure of liposuction needs a few small incisions to be made and a device like a suction tube with which the surgeon is able to vacuum the fat away. This kind of surgery is pretty expensive as compared to the lap bands and since the weight loss was not a result of the person’s effort, it is very easy for her or him to pile on the weight all over again. Liposuction is a procedure used to remove the excess fat that has not gone away by diet and exercise. Liposuction is basically used to remove excess fat from the midriff, buttocks, thighs and hips besides other areas like the neck, arms and face.
Finally we have the lap bands which are also known as the adjustable gastric bands or gastric sleeves. This too is a laparoscopic procedure. If you are sufficiently obese and you have several co morbid conditions, the majority of insurance companies will consider this surgery. Co morbid is basically things that could cause dangerous medical problems like hypertension, heart disease and diabetes. It is a known fact that weight loss helps in these conditions and if all else fails you can resort to weightloss surgery. You can achieve surgical weight loss by having a surgeon place a band over a part of your stomach making it shrink to a certain percentage of its actual size. This band can be moved and even removed so it is looked at as a reversible surgery.
